Healthy Aging Month Tip #1 - Get Active

Get Moving! Physical activity helps you live longer and prevent many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipid (cholesterol and triglyceride) profile, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and colon and breast cancers.

Here are some ways to help kick-start physical activity

At home:

  • Join a walking group in the neighborhood or at the local shopping center. 

  • Get the whole family involved — enjoy an afternoon bike ride with your kids or walk to a local park.

  • Walk up and down the soccer or softball field sidelines while watching the kids play.

  • Walk the dog — don't just watch the dog walk.

  • Clean the house to music, it helps you increase movement and increases  calorie burning.

  • Walk, skate, or cycle more, and drive less.

  • Do stretches and exercises every monring

  • Plant and care for a vegetable or flower garden.

  • Play with the kids — tumble in the leaves, play an outdoor game or dance to your favorite music.

  • Subscribe to an online workout series

At work:

  • Replace a coffee break with a quick walk. Ask a co-worker to join you.

  • Take part in an exercise program at work or a nearby gym.

  • Park farther from work to increase your stairs.

  • Skip the elevator and take the stairs

At play:

  • Walk, jog, skate, or cycle.

  • Swim or do water aerobics.

  • Take a class in martial arts, dance, or yoga

  • Canoe, row, or kayak. Plan a weekend getaway that involves some exercise.

  • Get involved in a group activity

  • Enjoy the outdoors, and take a nature walk.

  • Most important — have fun while being active!
